The PUBG World Champion 2019 is confirmed! Korea is again in the race, and Gen.G esports can now call itself World Champion. The squad is happy about 50 per cent of the prize pool and thus 2.000.000 US-Dollar!
At probably the most unfriendly times for European eSport fans, the big final of the PUBG Global Championship took place last weekend. In the night from Saturday to Sunday and Sunday to Monday, the best 16 teams remaining in the tournament played for their share of the prize pool totalling four million US dollars and the title of the best squad in Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds World in the Oakland Arena, Los Angeles.
Koreans make a claim clear
After the only German squad under the flag of G2 Esports had been eliminated in the elimination stage, it was mainly Asian and American teams that fought for the best places in the Grand Final. Directly in the first two of the twelve maps played in the circle of the best 16 in the world, the Koreans of Gen.G esports made their claim to a top-ranking clear.
The reigning world champion, who already took home the trophy in 2018 and an additional 420,000 US dollars in third-person mode, won the first two maps on Erangel “back to back” in 2019 in the first-person perspective as well and finished right at the top of the rankings.
Even though the squad around in-game leader ‘Esther’ dropped off a bit afterwards and achieved a 15th and 14th place among other things, it was enough for the title again in the end due to otherwise constantly high placings and kill-strong games.
FaZe’s a race to catch up is not enough
The greatest competition and danger for the title came from the FaZe Clan. The European roster around the Finn Anssi ‘mxey’ Pekkonen secured “Chicken Dinner” in matches 6 and 7. Also in the remaining games 8 to 12, the squad offered appealing games and took four more top-5 placings. But many points were often not taken due to passive play behaviour, so that in the end only up to 10 points in the final table to world champion Gen.G approached.
FaZe can nevertheless look forward to remarkable tournament performance, the title of runner-up world champion in 2019 and a total of 600,000 US dollars in prize money.
The remaining places in the top 5 are in the overall ranking:
3rd Four Angry Men (4AM) – China – 300,000 US dollars
4th OGN Entus Force – South Korea – 200,000 US dollars
5th VC Gaming – China – 150.000 US-Dollar
