The MOBA League of Legends won a total of 4 out of 6 Esports-related prizes at The Game Awards 2019:
One was directly awarded as the best Esports game, three other prizes went to an LoL team, an LoL event and an LoL presenter in connection with the Esports.
What prizes did League of Legends win? The 4 prizes are for:
-Best Esports game – that was League of Legends itself.
-Best Esports Team – these were G2 Esports, the finalists of the World Cup, a team from Europe. They were able to win 3 LoL competitions in 2019 – only the Worlds were missing for the Grand Slam.
-Best Esports event – the League of Legends World Championship 2019: The semi-final between SKT1 and G2 Esports broke spectator records.
-Best Esports host – the Belgian Eefje “Sjokz” Depoortere (32). She moderates the European league but was also present at the Worlds.
What kind of event was that? The Game Awards (VGA) are an annual award ceremony held at the end of a year. They are produced by Geoff Keighley.
They are like the “Videogame Oscars” and grow in importance from year to year.
In 2016 they had under 4 million viewers, in 2017 they already had 11.5 million, in 2018 the number rose to over 26 million. In 2019 it was a big event where numerous new games and even the new Xbox Series X were presented.
Who awards the prizes? The gaming prizes are awarded by experts who form a jury and then select the winners. From Germany, representatives of GamePro, GameStar, GamesWelt, PC Games and BILD were on this committee.
The prizes in the Esports section are distributed by representatives from 17 sites who are familiar with ESports such as Inven, ESPN, Polygon, Korizon, Dexerto or Dot Esports.
What prizes did LoL not win? The prize for the best eSport player went to Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf, the 16-year-old Fortnite champion who won $3 million at the Fortnite World Championship in the summer.
The prize for the best Esports coach went to Danny “zonic” Sørensen (33). The Dane is the coach of Astralis, a strong CS:GO, team.
