The qualification for the first Olympic tournament in 3×3 Basketball is possible in three ways. Four tickets each for Tokyo 2020 will be allocated for men and women via the world ranking list, three via qualification tournaments in March and the last via an additional final tournament.
This was announced by FIBA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday.
On November 1st, the teams that make it to Japan via the FIBA ranking will be announced. A maximum of two countries per continent can qualify via the ranking list.
Host Japan only gets one automatic starting place. Depending on the positions in the world ranking, this goes to the women or the men. If the better Japanese team is not one of the top four in the FIBA, it receives the fourth-placed team’s ticket, which means that they have to pass the qualification stage.
20 women’s and 20 men’s national teams will play for a total of six places in the qualifying tournaments. In another tournament, the last two participants will be sought. 3×3 basketball will be Olympic for the first time next year.
