The world championship in the fantasy strategy game Dota 2, “The International”, has once again broken its prize money record.
On Tuesday morning, the jackpot was around 25.6 million US dollars, which continues to rise. In 2018, the prestigious tournament in Vancouver was endowed with 25,532,177 million dollars. At that time, defending champion Team OG had secured 11.2 million of the total.
Whether The International, which will take place this year in Shanghai from 15th to 25th August, but also remains the world’s highest endowed eSports tournament, is questionable. There is a total of 30 million dollars to be won at the World Cup in the battle-royal hit Fortnite (July 26-28 in New York), which will be held for the first time in 2019.
The jackpot will continue to rise until the start of the Dota 2 World Championship. 1.6 million will be based on Valve, the rest on a crowdfunding system by fans. They acquire a so-called Battle Pass, which provides them with special game content. 25 per cent of the proceeds then flows into the money pot.
