Soon it is time and 2024 the blue hedgehog of SEGA celebrates his 30th birthday. But what about the preparations for this anniversary?
The Japanese magazine 4Gamer has asked Mr Takashi Iizuka, head of SEGA’s development studio Sonic Team, what the company is planning. Mr Iizuka thinks planning should begin soon and he would like to take on a new challenge for this anniversary.
Because of almost annual franchise releases, 4Gamer’s colleagues wondered if this would make it challenging to create something completely new. As an example, eSports titles were mentioned, which are becoming more and more popular. Of course, Iizuka thinks that a Sonic eSports title would be possible, but Sonic is first and foremost an action platformer. So, in his opinion, an eSports arena wouldn’t be quite right for a Sonic game. Of course, the team will continue to face new genre challenges, such as Team Sonic Racing, and it may well be that one of the many projects would fit the eSports.
