Marcel Schwarz from Team AOK won against 100 opponents and won the first edition of the WERDER eSPORTS FIFA19 Cup at the Weser Stadium.
In addition to the winner’s trophy, he also travelled home with the 1000 Euro prize money in his luggage. In the final, he won 3:0 against Sören Ibsch, who later came second. The podium was completed by Robin Uphues, who won the game for third place. The victory in the team ranking was secured by the LBS – among other things due to the strong performances of Sören Ibsch.
Around 7.30 p.m. on Saturday, 15.06.2019, the winner of the premiere of the WERDER eSPORTS FIFA19 Cup was announced. Marcel “plaplup” Schwarz, who represented the AOK team, won the trophy. In the final of the tournament, he defeated Sören “Kiwii0025″ Ibsch and crowned himself FIFA Champion of the North. He prevailed against around 100 opponents who qualified for the final event at the Weser Stadium in about 20 qualifying tournaments with a total of 1100 participants. Most of the finalists themselves came from the Werder region and some even travelled from Regensburg in Bavaria to take part in the green and white FIFA eSPORTS Cup. Also the age-technically the participant field was broadly occupied, the youngest player was twelve years old, the elders mid 30.
We are pleased that this tournament was so positively accepted and noticed. Our goal was to allow as many FIFA fans as possible to experience the eSPORTS live at Werder. That’s why we’re so happy about the great response,” said Werder’s eSPORTS manager Dominik Kupilas. And he continues: “Despite all the ambition, the sporting competition was carried out extremely fairly. The supporting programme with stands of our partners, the DJ, talks show matches of our FIFA professionals and prize games made for a very entertaining day. This event gives us great motivation to organise a series of tournaments next year as well,” said Kupilas.
All players first had to fight their way through the group phase, played in groups of three with outward and return matches, to enter the knockout stage. The first two from each group qualified for the intermediate round, after which a match brought the decision. Werders eSPORTS professionals Mohammed “MoAuba” Harkous and Michael “MegaBit” Bittner mingled with the spectators at the event, where they took time for photos, autographs and discussions with their fans. A total of 450 people, including the players, came to the VIP area of the Weser Stadium to play their part in ensuring that the first WERDER eSPORTS Cup successfully earned the title.
Special thanks go to the WERDER eSPORTS partners Conblu, Wiesenhof, Die Sparkasse Bremen, LBS, AOK, Radio Bremen, EWE and eSport Event Gmbh, who provided the framework for a very successful premiere event. With highlights such as a VR kicker or free physiotherapy, the partners occupied the players and spectators even away from the consoles and rounded off an eventful and highly exciting first WERDER eSPORTS Cup. In 2020, SV Werder is again planning to hold a WERDER eSPORTS Cup, followed by the FIFA 20.
