For Arsenal, it sets off the next damper without the Swiss granite Xhaka. In the round of sixteen of the Ligacup, the Gunners lost to champion Liverpool 5:6 after a penalty shootout.
In Liverpool, the Londoners experienced a roller coaster ride of emotions. Already in the 6th minute, the home team took the lead with an own goal from the central defender Shkodran Mustafi, who was highly controversial at Arsenal. Until the 36th minute, the visitors from London turned the game from 0-1 to 3-1 before losing a two-goal lead. It was not until the 94th minute that Divock saved Origi Liverpool into the penalty shootout, where Real loaner Dani Ceballos missed the only penalty.
As expected, Xhaka was not on Arsenal’s squad. Even without the scandal that the 27-year-old had caused in the championship game against Crystal Palace (2-2), Xhaka would have been spared in the Ligacup. On Sunday, the Swiss had answered the booing of his fans with provocative gestures and words during his one-hour substitution. Since then, the future of the Swiss International has been the subject of widespread debate.
