What is a Live Blind ?

A ‘live blind’ in Poker is a forced bet such used in the likes of Omaha and Hold Em. These bets are played ahead of the button and before a Poker hand begins. Since the player that plays the blind, still needs to call, raise or check, the blind remains live.
The term ‘live’ in poker refers to any potential opportunity or action that hasn’t been played yet. For instance, cards which have not been exposed or dealt yet are considered as live since these are still available to players to use to complete their hands. The term can refer to a player, game or any hand that’s not yet been discarded, fouled or folded.

The majority of blind games use live blinds, and these blinds are said to be live bets that indicate two things. Firstly they indicate that blinds are real bets whereby upon entering the pot, the player in the blind position, needs to come up with the differences between the current bet and the blind. Secondly, they indicate that the players in the blind can raise during their turn in case no other player raises before them.

Live Blind Explained

A live blind is also known as the amount that was wagered by the player that takes the blind and credits towards a raise or a call. If the player makes up the value of the blind owed into the pot, only the same value of the ‘big blind’ is considered as live. On the other hand, a ‘small blind’ together with any owed blind is considered dead for the reason that they can’t be credited to a raise or a call. This is the meaning of a dead blind.

New players at the table have the option of placing their bets right away or waiting for the big blind. In case the newest player chooses to wait, they won’t be dealt any cards until it’s their turn to place towards the ‘big blind’. In case the new player chooses to place their bet, he/she must bet the value of the ‘big blind’ in order to receive cards instantly.

In this case, both the ‘big blind’ and wagers are considered live blinds. This means that the players in the big blind and those players who wager are permitted to raise their blind bets. If an active or live player at the table prefers sitting out and missing at least one blind or more, to then return into the game, this player must wager either a small or a big blind. Or they can just wait for the big blind coming around to deal a card. In a situation like this, the big blinds are live, and the small blinds go to the pot.
