SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs opened their new arena with a closing quarter for the ages. Tim Duncan and Speedy Claxton came up with big fourth-quarter baskets and the Spurs limited the Toronto Raptors to six points as they pulled away for a 91-72 triumph in the first regular-season game at the SBC Center. It was the fewest points scored in any quarter by the Raptors - who went more than 8 1/2 minutes without a point until rookie Chris Jefferies made a layup with 38 seconds remaining - and the fewest allowed in any period by the Spurs. The Raptors also tied the NBA record for fewest points in a fourth quarter. Memphis was the last of three teams to be held to six points in the final period, on February 21, 2002 against Phoenix. "We did a great job defensively," Duncan said. "Our guards really stepped it up and did a great job." Toronto shot just 17 percent (3-of-18) in the period, while San Antonio made 56 percent (9-of-16). "We had a lot of open looks, but just couldn't knock them down," Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens said. "(The Spurs) made some good plays defensively down the stretch, forced a lot of turnovers." After Jelani McCoy hit a jumper in the paint to open the fourth quarter and get the Raptors within 70-68, Claxton hit a jumper, Duncan a turnaround jump hook and Claxton a reverse layup to trigger the game-closing run. Steve Kerr nailed a 3-pointer to make it 86-70 with 4:12 to play, forcing Toronto to call timeout. When play resumed, Claxton appeared to hurt his right shoulder diving for a loose ball. He left the game and did not return. "Obviously he's going to be gone a while and that's a big loss," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He's been great off the bench." "It popped out of place," Claxton said. "They popped it back into place. It's a little sore. It's very frustrating." Duncan had 22 points and 15 rebounds, Tony Parker scored 12 points and Kerr and Malik Rose 11 apiece for the Spurs, who shot 45 percent (34-of-75) from the field and limited the Raptors to 31 percent (25-of-81). "Malik did the job he always does off the bench," Popovich said. "He did all the solid, blue-collar things. We found a guy to make some shots for us and that was Steve Kerr. With Tim getting doubled, we need someone to knock down those shots and take some of the pressure off." Vince Carter paced Toronto with 18 points and had a couple of spectacular dunks but shot just 5-of-21. Offseason acquisition Voshon Lenard scored 17 points but just two in the second half. The game was tied at 19 after one quarter but San Antonio took a 46-40 lead into halftime after 16 first-half turnovers by the Raptors. The teams went back and forth in the third quarter before the Spurs took the lead for good, 63-62, on the first of two free throws by Rose with 2:04 to play. "Not a whole lot you can say other than we just couldn't hit shots," Carter said. "We were doing things right in the first half, but made too many turnovers." "We played great defense, especially in the fourth quarter," Kerr said. "It was a great way to open up at home."
