Introduction to Squash Betting
Squash is a racket and ball sport played in singles and doubles. The objective is to score more points than the opposition. The scoring system lends itself to betting. Matches play over the best of five games, and a player must win 11 points to win a set. At 10-all there must be an advantage of 2 points. The winner of a point is the server of the next point. The scoring system means there are fluctuations in the scoring and the odds. In an evenly closed match, each player can be the favourite and underdog. Squash betting has not gained the popularity of tennis betting. It is not a global sport, and there is far less live TV coverage than for tennis.
Betting Events
Squash is an individual sport, and unlike tennis and golf, there are no prestigious international team events. The biggest competition in the sport is the PSA World Tour. There are five categories which are classified by prize money. The pinnacle of the tour is the World Championship. The World Series Squash Finals bring together the eight best players of the year. The event is squash’s version of the World Tour Finals in tennis. The players meet in two groups on a round-robin basis with the top two players progressing to the semi-finals. Since 2013, the US Pro Squash Series has attracted betting interest. It is not an Olympic sport. However, there are requests to include matches in the Summer Games. The PSA publishes monthly world rankings for men and women.
Betting Types
Squash is a head-to-head sport in which there is usually a definite outcome. Players occasionally retire due to injury, but bookmaker’s rules apply. One player will always progress to the next round in a knockout tournament. Bookmakers issue pre-match odds a few days before a match. The odds change due to weight of money which is influenced by injury news. Squash is not hugely popular for in-play betting. It does not have a global following, unlike tennis, which is a worldwide sport. Some bookmakers offer live betting. However, the events are rarely streamed live, which means bettors rely on an animation of the action and live match data. Customers can bet on the outright winner of major tournaments in outright betting.
Squash Markets
The most popular squash betting markets are the match, winner, totals and handicaps. Bettors can place the same three bets for each set. Bookmakers offer more exotic markets such as the match correct and correct score in games. These more speculative markets provide customers with the potential for a decent win from a small stake. Totals and handicaps usually display in half points and games. They are two-way markets which eliminate the tie.
