What Is Quartered?

The term “Quartered” is used when a split pot is split further in order to pay off a tie. Thus, two players are awarded one quarter each while the third player keeps half of the share. Rarely, the pot is divided into four parts to pay off two tied hands in the game; this quartered type of pot only happens in the case of a tied pot in high to low games.

Quartered Explained

When a pot is divided into four parts and the price has been shared with more than one individual, this pot is referred to as ‘Quartered’. It can happen anytime as long as there are four winners in any betting game. If four players win a lottery jackpot, for instance, the prize will have to be quartered. This occurs in other games, like Bingo (where many players might win the ‘full house’ at the same time), Sweepstakes and Betting Pools. These games are typically ‘quartered’ or have a similar fractional dividend, due to the occurrence of multiple winners.

In Poker, when two or four players receive a quarter of the pot, this situation is referred to as ‘quartered’. Although it is rare, this type of situation occurs in some games like Omaha poker. In the case of games that are played based on high to low rules, there will be two winners; in which one has the best hand with the highest value, and the other has the hand with the lowest value. Then, the pot may be halved and split amongst the two players in the game.

Typically, the two players will divide the pot amongst themselves when there’s a tie for a Poker pot. In the case of a game based on the high to low rules, the high or low part of the pot will be split, and not the full part of it. Thus, the pot is accurately ‘quartered’. In most cases, the tied players each take a quarter while the third player takes the remaining half of the share.
