What Is Poker Face?

When gamblers play, they often use an expressionless face to hide their reactions while playing. This is referred to as their ‘Poker face’.
Usually, when playing, Poker gamblers watch over other players to observe clues about the player’s cards and how the player is likely to play. So, professional players use hats or sunglasses to avoid any opposing player from seeing even the minutest of expressions.

Robert Phipps, the author of Body Language, said that “your actions matter, not words. A minute reaction is a perfect replica of what an individual is feeling, and this expression will be immediately changed once the individual becomes conscious of what they want you to think”.

One thing Poker players try to do is to keep up with an expressionless face, but still monitor the expressions of other players closely. They try to appear undisturbed but still are vigilant of their opponents’ subconscious ideas.

Poker Face Explained

Players use a Poker face to cover their reactions towards a good or bad hand. For instance, a blinking eye can show anxiety.
For a poker face to be called professional, it must be direct and discreet, to not allow others to read it. Therefore making it more difficult for others to identify a bluff or cheat.

Poker faces are emotionless facial expressions; therefore, the player must control his whole body not to give out signals when they get certain types of cards. For instance, tapping the foot can show that you are excited to play your card fast.

Players usually check for their opponent’s reaction to their cards. Expert players accessorise themselves to hide possible expressions.
