What are Non-negotiable Chips?

Non-negotiable chips are chips that are different from traditional ones in that a player cannot exchange them for cash or other winnings if used alone. They are also known as ‘promotional chips’, or ‘non-neg. chips’ and players can use them in any game. However, if they are used individually, they are practically worthless.

Non-negotiable Chips Explained

Non-negotiable chips, as the name implies, possess a fixed value. And, they are promotional tools that casinos use to encourage active players or dissatisfied players, that is, to encourage them to continue playing and not to leave the game. So, these chips differ in appearance and their value is limited to not more than one hand or round in a game.

These chips are designed to keep players playing or committed to the game and casino for a particular period of time. Giving a ‘non-neg. chip’ gives off a friendly impression of the casino in question, as the chip is either a reward for avid players or as a second chance for players who are already losing interest in the game. Lucky players or players with strong hands would not joke with their ‘non-neg chips’, if they get one or two, as they know that such chips can translate to a cash-win or potential prevention of losing.

When such a player is present, the casino expects them to win and invest more money on regular chips, or become more excited and continue to spend more money in the game when they nearly win.
If a participant plays with the ‘non-neg. chip’ and comes to a tie, the house may allow them to keep the chip and reuse it later. The use of ‘non-neg chips’ is not limited, although the chips are only used in chip-oriented games, such as Blackjack and other games which require chips while playing.
