What Is Grift?

The term to ‘grift’ refers to stealing or cheating when a poker game is ongoing, most times in little amounts and in a sporadic way. A grifter is someone involved in cheating in an irregular way when their game is ongoing, making a little from every game they target. Also, the term can refer to a scam or cheat by a gambler. In certain regions, a grifter is simply called, a grift. Grifting is restricted by casinos where any player caught making use of any scheme that is fraudulent or illegal, is evicted from the game and prosecuted.

Grift Explained

In Poker, there is a similarity between grifting and grinding. The player engages in chipping away the game and earns a small profit, instead of targeting the main win. But then, the board above bears the grinding meaning that the player is showing his intention on the main win. In comparison, the term to “grift a win” means to cleverly trick or swindle your way into winning.

Dishonest play, cheating or the use of a certain techniques to gain advantage from other players, is what it means when a player has grifted. At times, the term is used to connote certain players who engage in stealing from the table by either making a take-back of their own chips or by taking a swipe of those owned by their opponents. Through the use of holdouts or by taking cards and hiding them, a player has made a grift. However, the term usually signifies the the practice of small thefts.

The method of grifting is most often applied in a random way, therefore making it difficult to identify a grifter at the table.
