What Is ‘Draw Dead’?

In poker, to Draw Dead is the term used when you make a draw even though the hand you hold has already been defeated. Drawing dead happens in the course of a game when some players become aware that a hand is drawn against them. When a player falls victim of drawing dead it doesn’t mean this player cannot complete a working hand in the game, but they are also already aware of their losing hand.

‘Draw Dead’ Explained

When a poker player is Draw Dead , they still have the chance to go for a draw in the same game, even as it is clear that their opponent has successfully defeated them. A player could still be lucky enough to complete a draw perfectly with his selected cards, but the final result will be too low for him to catch up with other players. Players face the draw dead situation when their hands are full of unconnected cards leaving them with a slim chance of a five-card hand, but are just able to pick up some good pairs, despite that other players are already able to fill their flush and win the pot.

In situations for example, when players Draw Dead to a straight, they use the word as an opportunity to bring in another hand that does not change the atmosphere of the game, as the opponent may still in this sense be able to win as the opponent whose hand is Draw Dead. To have a better understanding of the word, they use it to describe a player who has already drawn a wrong hand and has, unfortunately, killed his game. For example, when a player holds the four of the parts of a straight flush and could not make the fifth but loses the hand to a pair in that regard, then the game defines the hand as being Draw Dead.

The word is in most cases used to describe a player who continually busts on the hit, particularly in blackjack games when a player busts a lot of the 20s and 21s, such players are Draw Dead to the dealer’s cards and are subsequently forced to reach the end of the game.
