What Is Craps ?

Craps is a casino term for a dice game. The game’s origin come from a dice game popular in England, called Hazard. Though Craps is also played on the streets, it can only legally be played in casinos. There are some significant differences between casinos and street Craps. The street version of the game is known as ‘private’ Craps. The casino version is known as ‘bank’ Craps. The private version differs in that players bet against other players. The bank version pits players against the house.

There are some small differences between the two as well. Rules often vary, depending on where a game is being played. However, the basic rules of both games are the same. In both versions, shooters throw the dice. It lands on a wall or backboard, and when the dice land on the numbers two, three or twelve, that round is over. Players are then tasked with placing a bet in favour of or against the rolls a shooter completes. It is important to note that rolls have different odds; some have low odds, others have high odds. If a shooter rolls a double zero, his or her odds of winning are 30-1.

Craps Explained

There are two phases to each round of Craps. One is the ‘come out’ and one is the ‘point roll’. Games begin with the come out. Players start by betting for or against the shooter. A bet for the pass line is in favour, while a bet against is not. Before shooting, the one doing the shooting places a bet. Players are not required to do so at this point. Any player that does bet loses money if the dice lands on two, three or twelve. Those that win because of where the dice has landed have 2-1 odds. When the shooter wins, the money in the prize pool goes to him or her. He or she also continues shooting for the next phase of the game.

When the point phase starts, the betting odds rise. Players now have options when placing bets. They can choose from many different types. For example, a place bet assumes the dice will land on four, five, six, eight, nine, ten. If these numbers are hit before a seven is rolled, players win. Eventually, a game’s shooter will complete his or her turn and pass the responsibility to the next player.
