What Is Bust Out ?

In the game of poker, to “bust out” would mean losing all the chips or money while in play. When the player is said to be “bust out,” this signifies that the player is out of the game or tournament. However, it doesn’t mean that you by being “bust out” it is necessarily the end of your game. There are instances where rebuying chips is given as an option for that player to be back in the game.
However, if the player refuses to buy that option, then the officials can bar him from purchasing chips and will finally declare him ‘bust out’.

Bust Out Explained

With the given definition above, anyone who would be ‘bust out’ will be in a tense situation. But it is not the case when you are in a Poker tournament. When you are ‘bust out’ in that tournament, you will still be financially benefited once you have made it to the list of placers. Around 50% of the pot money is awarded to the winner, 25% to the second place and 10% will be for the third place. The rest of the pot money will be shared among the other players.

Its amount will depend on what place or position you have finished. With the high amount of money to win at stake, you really can’t blame others for choosing to be in professional Poker to make a living.

An example of this event is the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event. The pot money was $82,000,000 (this is said to be the highest ever prize to be given in a Poker tournament). Everyone had a greater chance to earn and take home some money. In this event, winner Jamie Gold had taken away $12,000,000. Those in the top ten won $1.5 million each, and even Mitch Schock who was in the 29th place, brought home over $330,000.

Usually, in professional Poker tournaments, a player pays no less than $10,000, to buy chips. All of this money will then go straight to the pot and will be divided among the players at the end of the game. But it is not the case if you were to play in an unofficial Poker tournament. Just like what is happening in gangster movies, the money will be collected, and there will also be a ‘pot’. Unless the players have called off or had left the game early, only one player takes it all. This is where the real meaning and drama of being “bust out” applies.
