What Is Athos ?

Known as a slang term in Texas Hold Em Poker, Athos is what players call a hand that involves a 10-A. At times the term is used in Blackjack as well. However, in most cases, a 10-A in Blackjack is referred to as a just 21. Of all the Blackjack hands a player could get, this is the overwhelming majority favourite. Since the two cards in the hand are called T and A, this explains the name of the hand.

Athos Explained

There are many terms used for a couple of hole cards in any Hold Em Poker game. Athos is among many of them. Every two card combination in the game has its own slang name. A combination of an Ace and a 10 is usually referred to as the A Team. Not surprisingly, a king and queen pair is called a royal wedding (but only when their suites match.) A hand with a J and 7 is referred to as a Jack Daniels, in honour of whisky.

In most cases, the name of a pair of cards stems from its value in the game. However, the particular suite of a card in a pair sometimes inspires its term. One example of this is the Darth Vader hand. This contains a spade, a club and two four cards. It is named the Darth Vader because he is a representative of the fours’ dark side. While these terms can be seen as bad puns, they still help players remember what particular hands are called.

There are two hole (a.k.a hidden cards,) in Hold Em Poker. There is also an open community consisting of five cards dealt face up on the game table. Any winning hand must include cards from the hole and from the community.

The idea of naming a hand for the value of it is something that has evolved over the years. Poker culture in any casino in the world now includes these terms. Any two-card pair has a nickname assigned to it. Some pairings are referred to by several different slang terms. From country to country and region to region, these terms can vary. However, the theme of using slang terms in casino games is universal.
