“With over a decade of constant work for eSport at German schools, the German Games School Championship is one of the fixtures of the German eSport movement. Several thousand schoolchildren have been positively influenced by eSport competitions for their future careers,” explains ESBD President Hans Jagnow. “We are delighted to welcome the DGS as a new member of the ESBD and to be able to jointly shape the important area of young talent in eSport in the future”.
More than 600 learners get involved
The German Games School Championship starts the 2019 season with three tournaments, looking for the best young players in Germany. This year’s DGS disciplines are League of Legends, Rocket League and EA Sports FIFA 19.
600 pupils from over 100 schools in Germany are involved in the group phase of the largest eSports amateur championship. With immediate effect, the DGS Challenge Cup will be played from home in three disciplines. The three best-placed teams and players of the online phase qualify for the final in Cologne and will be invited to Gamescom.
The competition will start with the group phase. All registered teams and players will be divided into groups of the same size and will play for a place in the knockout phase just like in a football World Cup. During the whole competition, only one match per week has to be played, this can be arranged flexibly with the opponent.
Final live at Gamescom
Of the more than 600 learners, 500 play in a team. 30 will qualify for the grand finale at Gamescom in Cologne. From 23 to 25 August 2019, the Cologne Game Lab of the TH Köln will be the venue for the decisive games. The award ceremony will take place on one of the Gamescom stages of the host partner ESL. The finalists will receive tickets for Gamescom from the game – Association of the German Games Industry and non-cash prizes from the other partners Tt eSPORTS and Electronic Art.
For the Gymnasium Norf in Neuss, the mission this year is quite clearly: defending the title. The champions of the supreme discipline League of Legends are allowed to exhibit the challenge cup of the DGS in the school until the beginning of August before it is handed over to the new champions.
Also in this year numerous teams, which participate since several seasons in the tournament, take part again. In addition to the Elisabeth-Gymnasium Eisenach – which took part in the first tournament in 2006 – the Waldorf school Blote Vogel Witten is taking part for the fourth year in a row.
