The qualifying phases of the 2019 Fortnite World Cup are in full swing, and several francophone players have already qualified. Among them, three Swiss representatives have bought their tickets to New York, the venue of the final stages of the event.
Epic Games is big on
Last year, Epic Games, the publisher of Fortnite, announced that a hundred million dollars would be invested in eSports for 2019. At the same time, the cornerstone was laid for the 2019 Fortnite World Championship. A few months later, on April 18th, the starting shot was fired for the qualifying rounds of the competition. Since then, the best players in Fortnite’s “Arena” mode have been invited every week to qualify for the final phase of this World Cup. Each Saturday, there is a three-hour session that allows participating players to earn points based on the number of kills and ranking of games they play in the time available. Each player can only play ten games in this three-hour timeframe.
The next day there will also be a second three-hour session with the best players from the previous day participating. This time in the prize pool: Tickets for the final of the Fortnite World Cup 2019, which will take place from July 26th to 28th in New York. All this, of course, through the distribution of already attractive cash prizes totalling one million dollars per week – yes, we are also starting to consider switching to Fortnite in 2020. A total of 100 seats are to be allocated for the individual finals, while 50 seats are also available for duos.
Obviously, the system leaves little room for chance and, roughly speaking, allows the most talented players to buy their tickets to New York. At the same time, they can also add to the household budget the prize money associated with the qualification. In the final there will be a cash prize of almost 30.000.000 dollars – a decision made, we start the training to become a Fortnite Pro next year. Let’s be clear: every player who participates in the final of the 2019 Fortnite World Championship will go home with at least $50,000, while the overall winner will pocket no less than $3 million. A big challenge for players who are sometimes no older than 13 years, as this has been set as the minimum age for the competition.
Three qualified representatives for Switzerland
The best names from the Fortnite competition scene are therefore expected among the players. Among those who immediately come to mind is Duong “Kinstaar” Huynh, a Swiss who used to be one of the best players. He has solved his ticket to New York with the seventh place in the overall standings. The weekend before, he had already written his name on the board of the duo tournament, where he and his French teammate Corentin “Hunter” Tardif made it to fourth place in the qualification. With them another pair of the organization “Solary” and another duo from Switzerland: Karim “Airwaks” Benghalia, former League of Legends professional, who has now successfully specialized in Fortnite.
He was also on the road with a French teammate, Nicolas “Nikof” Frejavise. However, Airwaks is currently not qualified for the solo competition. But another Swiss player is already there: Issa “Issa” Rahim, from the “Ghost Gaming” Orga. An American organization known for its Gears of War team and also represented in the Counter-Strike.
All these players will meet directly in the United States at the end of July for a three-day competition at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, the main tennis court of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The hall is known as the venue of the US Open Tennis Tournament, one of the largest tennis tournaments, and in its current configuration can accommodate up to 22,547 people. A place that is in keeping with the ambitions of Epic Games, which has also expressed its desire to continue the weekly competitions with well-assorted cash prizes. The publisher has also drawn on organizations that specialize in organizing eSports events to expand their event offerings.
